Why is the lower part of the enclosure made of solid shadecloth rather than netting?
Topic starter
I was asked this question recently at a conference, and here's the answer: The lower section of the enclosure is made of opaque, fire-resistant shade cloth to (1) provide protection if the smoker accidentally comes in contact with the material, to (2) give the bees a sense of privacy and reduce events that trigger defensive behavior, and to (3) serve as a splash guard.
